What Does a Protective Order Do?
Our Denton, Collin, and Tarrant County domestic violence attorneys can help you navigate the legal processes required to file a protective order against your abuser so that you can feel safe at home again.
Also known as a "restraining order," a protective order may include various provisions, such as:
- No Contact Provision – Restricting the abuser from calling, e-mailing, texting, stalking, attacking, and disturbing the victim
- Stay Away Provision – Ordering the perpetrator to remain a specific number of yards or feet away from the victim, their home, school, job, and car, as well as a child’s home and school
- Move Out Provision – Forcing the abuser to move out of a home shared by the person they abused
- Peaceful Contact Provision – Allowing the perpetrator to amicably communicate with the person they abused on a limited basis, such as child care and visitation
- Counseling Provision – Ordering the abuser to attend counseling
- Firearms Provision – Ordering the abuser to surrender any guns they have in possession and prohibiting them from buying a firearm
Violation of a protective order can result in jail time and a fine. If the violation derived from a violent incident, the perpetrator can also be prosecuted for a misdemeanor or felony, along with jail time of up to two years.

I was more than taken care of by this law firm. My attorney Shelby Hart believed in my case since day one. My situation was far from easy, I was trying to move out of state with my son to start a family with my husband. His father wanted to restrict me to the county I currently lived it. I was turned away by another attorney because she said there was no way I had a chance. But when I called Shelby he was nothing but uplifting, positive, and honest about the risk and chances but was reassuring of my chance and possibilities. He never gave up and found all kinds of ways to make this happen for me. He was always keeping me informed and allowed me to make any and all final decisions. Ashley Leverett, his parallel was always so helpful and on top of everything. She was also very sympathetic with me and gave good advice as well has helped me along the way with getting all my documents together. Even down to billing and payments, Georgia was always pleasant to work with on arranging and making my payments as well as answering any questions I had. Shelby, Ashley, and I won the case and I am completely moved in with my husband, son and newest member on the way! We are so happy and grateful for all the help we got at Coker!- Piper S.

We are from California and we needed a local probate attorney. After calling around and speaking with 3 different attorneys, we settled on Coker, Robb & Cannon, Family Lawyers. Tyler Livingston and his staff were amazing and very efficient. Even though we are in California, he kept us up to date. He settled our case in 5 months and we are extremely grateful for the service we received. If you are looking for a highly-skilled, affordable attorney, this is the firm we recommend.- Helena R.

Mr. Pax did an excellent job with my divorce from the consult to final disposition. He made the process easier than I expected, since I was moving during the divorce process. He always had time to answer questions and set appropriate expectations. He and the staff worked around my sometimes odd schedule to get things done. I found everyone I interacted with to be friendly, professional and courteous. I would recommend them to anyone else needing a divorce attorney.- Patricia

I’m not sure what your family law needs are, but I am sure that Coker, Robb & Cannon can help you. And if you’re looking for a divorce lawyer that won’t add to the stress and anxiety of the situation, then definitely go with Shelby Hart, I couldn’t be more grateful for how he helped me.
I reached out online, and they got back to me the same day. I think it was Rachel that reached out and interviewed me and after discussing my situation she paired me with Shelby, who was also a new parent, and that was amazing! I don’t know if this is standard practice, but it should be. It should also be mentioned that Rachel worked with me throughout the process: on my case as a paralegal, to help me schedule time and figure out documents, and she was incredibly kind, patient and thoughtful in every interaction.
Shelby was invaluable, in that he not only made me feel less stressed out about getting divorced, he also gave me advice on what the different outcomes would be depending on the path I chose. He helped me negotiate a decree that would not only be in the best interest of my child and myself, but one that would stand up in court. His advice kept me grounded, and he tailored his approach to my now ex-husband perfectly. That may not seem important on the surface, but when you are living with the person you are divorcing, it makes a huge difference in your day-to-day life and interactions with that person.
I was fully divorced within 3 months of contacting Coker, Rob & Cannon, and I plan on using them for my will and any other family law needs I may have in the future. Shelby, sincerely, I appreciate everything you did and cannot thank you enough.
