Adopting a child can be overwhelming, especially if you are a single parent. There is abundant information to sift through, and numerous steps must be taken before you can welcome your new family member home.

The Adoption Process

Single parents in Texas interested in adopting are responsible for ensuring that the state’s adoption process is followed correctly. This process includes meeting criteria such as:

  • Gathering required documents;
  • A home study;
  • Proving financial stability; and,
  • Matching with a child (if the parent was not previously matched with a child).

Gathering Required Documents

This can require significant effort as different types of documents may need to be obtained from multiple sources. Generally, these will include identification documents (such as a driver’s license or passport), financial history (such as tax returns or pay stubs), references (from family and friends), medical records, background checks (including criminal background checks), birth certificates for anyone living in your home, marriage/divorce records if applicable, insurance policies (both health and liability coverage) and proof of income.

Home Study

A home study typically consists of several components, including an extensive application, interviews, financial information, and a home inspection. Each component must be completed before the adoption process can move ahead.

The caseworker conducts an interview to get a complete view of the individual’s parenting abilities. The caseworker will ask detailed questions about life events to assess whether or not the adult has the necessary knowledge and experience to raise a child effectively.

Additionally, the caseworker inspects the prospective adoptive parent’s home to verify its safety standards meet local regulations specific to adoption eligibility criteria. During this visit, a casework checks part of the home, such as:

  • If there are any smoke detectors/fire extinguishers;
  • The living arrangements are free from potential hazards such as lead paint or asbestos materials;
  • If there are properly functioning electrical outlets/appliances and ventilation;
  • If there is enough adequate space/bedrooms with appropriate bedding/furnishings; and,
  • The cleanliness of the home.

Proving Financial Stability

Financial information is required to determine if an adoptive parent has sufficient resources to provide for their adopted child’s needs both now and in the future. This includes providing:

  • Proof of income obtained from various sources such as salary or investments;
  • Bank statements showing liquid assets available for use during emergencies or unexpected expenses related to raising a child;
  • Any debts that may need to be paid off first before finances are available for adoption costs;
  • Copies of tax returns from the previous two years or more if applicable; and,
  • Other information that is pertinent to financial stability.
