Most divorce and family attorneys believe they have seen and heard it all
when it comes to crazy divorce cases. But then we read about stories like
this one and realize that we most definitely have not.
A Tarrant county man filed for divorce from his wife on October 16, 2009,
and then promptly married another woman on the same day. He lived with
his second wife only 15 miles away from his first wife. The second wife
believed that the man divorced his first wife earlier in the year.
At first, it sounds like the man may have thought that just simply filing
for divorce meant he was divorced. However, he continued to live with
his first wife in Arlington and his second wife in Grapevine. He had a
job in aviation which required extensive periods of travel, so neither
woman thought anything of it when he was gone for some time. What happened
to his divorce filing? The court dismissed it when he failed to appear
for a hearing, and it seems that his first wife never knew he filed for
divorce, which would make sense why she continued to live with him in
He lived this double-life somewhat successfully for a couple of years,
until May 2012, when his second wife found evidence that her husband had
been financially supporting two households. The second wife called the
first wife, and then the first wife promptly called the police, who arrested
the man for bigamy, a third-degree felony.
In the end, the first wife has filed for divorce. Whereas the man never
followed through when he originally filed, it’s doubtful the first
wife will make the same mistake. What’s extremely sad about this
case is that the first wife did have one child with the man, and most
likely, it’s going to be that child who will suffer the most in
the aftermath of this debacle.
